A favourite of mine since it was released, Deacon Blue's Raintown still stands strong all these years later.

The album, released in 1987, has a very strong flavour of Glasgow, and this is backed up by the album cover.

That large crane on the docks in Glasgow, I did a feasibility study and assessment for a client 20 years ago for converting the structure into a hotel. Needless to say it never happened.

Going to stick this on Spotify now, I have not heard the album for years

I think they never bettered it . The debut album sang from the soul . It had swagger and grit .Songs of working class hope and dreams and unrequited love. Songs that were never tailor made pop songs but became so because they worked their way into your noggin . I love the production on the album which became harsher and brighter on  their later releases  .  I actually love Ooh Las Vegas after this album which was b-sides and outtakes  they deemed not good enough . No one sings a Ricky Ross song quite like Ricky . The accent not as obvious as the Proclaimers but still you know it’s a Scottish band . If Chocolate Girl fails to move you never mind Born in a Storm  ,Raintown and Dignity then you’ve a cold heart . I’m giving it 4 stars . I would give it 5 but I think one of those would be for nostalgic reasons .

Played it through and enjoyed it a lot, sounds quite dated, but then it's thirty odd years old and has that right.

Who says music was crap in the eighties??????I

Going to play it again before I vote.

For me, their later albums have some good tracks, but Raintown stands alone as an album to play all the way through in one sitting. Whilst the songs are individually great, the album makes more sense as a whole, giving more of a feeling of Glasgow and the social issues at the time.

Excellent album but not quite a must have classic. 4/5

Dignity never charted when released , a year later it was re-released and made #31 then 17 years later with the Greatest Hits Album out it was released again as a single and made #20 very surprising seeing the airplay it got . Anyway without it and Chocolate Girl this album just passes me by , one point each fot those singles 2/5 , just .

too pop for me, I always thought they tried too hard to become the next Simple Minds (who I do like especially when in the mood)
1.5/5 so a 2

I really liked this. For me, not one bad tune. If I had to single out the standout tunes, they would be ‘He Looks Like Spencer Tracy Now’, ‘When Will You’ and ‘Dignity’. A strong 4/5. Would have been a 5, but there was no 10 minute guitar solo 🙄 Oh, The poll has closed...
PS, I noted a Van Morrison song on the extended version of this album, ‘Angeliou’, do please check out this
‘proper’ offering, it’s a cracker...
